Fight On! is a meta-Brechtian, multi-media, historical roller-coaster ride through the occupation of the Canadian West in the late 19th Century. The dates, places and times mentioned in the play are, for the most part, factual. Francis Jeffery Dickens third son to Charles Dickens did spend 11 years as a member of the North West Mounted Police. Events and much of the dialogue are fleshed out with ironic abandon, which does not make them any less truthful. Characters’ names, the occasional phrase and some snippets of dialogue are purloined gleefully from the work of Charles Dickens. Drew Hayden Taylor provides a running commentary that sends up, from an Indigenous perspective, the Dickensian ironic romantic Settler story.
