On a spring night in 1986 in County Wicklow, thieves came from Dublin, broke into Sir Alfred's palace, and stole eighteen paintings worth one hundred million dollars, one a Vermeer. The hunt for them lasted seven years. The author explores the age-old contest between Irish criminals and the Garda, Ireland's National Police Service, and the tradition of brigandage in Irish history.
