Orchester Opernhaus ZÃórich. Chorc2005., TDK Marketing Europe GmbH Call No: DVD Opera Beethoven Fidelio (2004) Availability:1 of 1 At Your Library Series Title: Rovi Media Collection.Summary Note: German opera with spoken dialogue by Ludwig van Beethoven, his only opera. The German libretto was originally prepared by Joseph Sonnleithner from the French of Jean-Nicolas Bouilly and the work premiered at Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 November 1805. The next year Stephan von Breuning helped shorten the three acts to two. After further work on the libretto by Georg Friedrich Treitschke a final version performed at the Kärntnertortheater on 23 May 1814. By convention both of the first two versions are referred to as Leonore. The opera tells how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named "Fidelio", rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. Bouilly's scenario fits Beethoven's aesthetic and political outlook: a story of personal sacrifice, heroism and eventual triumph (the usual topics of Beethoven's "middle period") with its underlying struggle for liberty and justice mirroring contemporary political movements in Europe. Some notable moments in the opera include the "Prisoners' Chorus", an ode to freedom sung by a chorus of political prisoners, Florestan's vision of Leonore come as an angel to rescue him, and the scene in which the rescue finally takes place. The finale celebrates Leonore's bravery with alternating contributions of soloists and chorus.

-- The pearl fishers2012., C Major Entertainment Call No: DVD Opera Bizet-Pecheurs-2012 Availability:1 of 1 At Your Library Summary Note: Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) is an opera in three acts by the French composer Georges Bizet, to a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. It was first performed on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, and was given 18 performances in its initial run. Set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon, the opera tells the story of how two men's vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman, whose own dilemma is the conflict between secular love and her sacred oath as a priestess. The friendship duet "Au fond du temple saint", generally known as "The Pearl Fishers Duet", is one of the best-known numbers in Western opera.

Despite being warned against it, she asks the witch JeÅibaba to help her. In order for her wish to be fulfilled, Rusalka must give up her voice and face eternal damnation if her love fails. Jaroslav Kvapil's libretto inspired DvoÅÃk to compose a masterpiece, a compelling opera full of poignant lyricism and dramatic twists. ÃdÃm Fisher and Stefan Herheim masterfully present this "lyrical fairytale' at La Monnaire. In this widely acclaimed interpretation, the fairytale elements assume frighteningly realistic dimensions making this enchanting proudction a psychoanalytical study of male fantasies and female archetypes."--Container.

Using doubles to suggest the paths taken, or not taken, by its two impulsive protagonists, Holten gives eloquent voice to the loss and regret that lies at the heart of Eugene Onegin. Simon Keenlyside and Krassimira Stoyanova bring both experience and dynamic energy to the pair of protagonists, while the youthful, 'heartrending' tenor of Pavol Breslik and the idiomatic sweep of Robin Ticciati's 'inspired' conducting (The Independent) were enthusiastically received at the premiere of this visually opulent staging.

2015., Royal Opera House Call No: DVD Opera Verdi-Vepres-2015 Availability:1 of 1 At Your Library Summary Note: Presented in its Covent Garden premiere in Autumn 2013, this staging of Verdiœs Les Vêpres Siciliennes directed by Stefan Herheim and conducted by the Royal Operaœs Music Director, Verdi specialist Sir Antonio Pappano went on to win the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production. The Sunday Times hailed it the best the Verdi year in Britain has to offer,· praising the standout event of the Verdi bicentenary celebrations. Herheim, whose reputation was cemented with his production of Parsifal at Bayreuth in 2008, is a director with a flair for spectacle and a sense of irony who rarely takes an operatic scenario at face value. Rather than telling a story of 13th-century conflict between the Sicilians and their French oppressors, his production, transposed to the mid-19th century, provides a commentary on the extravagant world of Parisian opera with its politics, exploitation and betrayals. The Financial Times praised the maestro for the sense of scale and style that [he] brings to the score,· while the Observer spoke of exciting singing and top orchestral playing under the baton of that matchless Verdi devotee, Antonio Pappano.· Considered one of the most promising Verdians of her generation, the French-trained Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian rises to all these challenges as the Duchess Hélène. American tenor Bryan Hymel, whose recital album Héroïque is also released on Warner Classics in February 2015, takes on one of Verdiœs highest tenor roles. Bryan Hymel was the admirable and ardent Henri,· wrote Opera magazine, with his turbo-boosted bel canto tenor rising fearlessly to the top notes.· His father (and enemy) Montfort is sung by the imposing and charismatic baritone Michael Volle, and the bass Erwin Schrott gives a starry performance as the fanatical Procida.

The lead role is sung by Gregory Kunde, who successfully interpreted both Verdiœs and Rossiniœs Otello in one year, perhaps the first tenor ever to do so.
